Living with the MG Comet EV
The rise of electric vehicles has been remarkable, particularly in an era where environmental concerns, pollution, and the preservation of fossil fuels are at the forefront of global consciousness. Joining the EV revolution, MG Motors introduces its latest addition to the electric family, the Comet EV. After spending considerable time with this vehicle, we’ve conducted a thorough review, delving into its performance and handling. Here, we share our firsthand experience and comprehensive analysis of what it’s like to live with this compact EV.
Practicality Evaluation: The Comet EV boasts a compact, boxy, and upright design, encapsulating efficiency within its four-wheel frame. Upon entering, one is immediately drawn to the petite steering wheel, evoking a sense of operating a toy car. However, the limited seat adjustments – restricted to fore and aft movements without height modification – posed a challenge, particularly with the rearview mirror obstructing visibility on the left-hand side.
Navigating the two-door configuration, accessing the driver’s seatbelt can be cumbersome due to the extended B-pillar. To mitigate this, MG ingeniously provides a seatbelt holder on the driver’s seat for added convenience. However, the Comet EV’s interior layout presents unconventional features, such as the hazard light button’s placement on the roof panel, which may induce panic during emergencies. Furthermore, the cabin’s storage options are somewhat limited, with a missing glovebox and door pockets that accommodate only small items.
Tech-Savvy Features: Despite its ergonomic quirks, the MG Comet excels in technological prowess. The top-spec Plush variant offers a plethora of advanced features, including a sizable 10.25-inch twin display for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, wireless mobile connectivity, multiple USB ports with fast charging capabilities, and an intelligent key system.
However, certain drawbacks warrant attention, notably the occasional malfunction of the infotainment system while in operation, and the susceptibility of the completely white interior upholstery to dirt accumulation over time.
In summary, the MG Comet EV presents a compelling option for urban commuters seeking an eco-friendly alternative. While its compact design and advanced technology contribute to its appeal, certain ergonomic nuances and interior considerations highlight areas for improvement in future iterations.
