India-bound Mercedes Maybach SL spied on test
In 2022, Mercedes introduced a stunning new Maybach concept based on its two-door SL roadster. The concept merged the sleek body of an SL with the opulent features characteristic of the Maybach brand. Recently, this vehicle has been spotted in real-world testing, marking its transition from concept to reality.
The original concept car was notable for its bold design elements, including large deep-dish wheels and an expansive Maybach grille, all housed within the elegant SL frame. The production model, however, has evolved. It retains the signature large chrome grille and forward-leaning stance typical of the SL range, but features a more conventional wheel design befitting the Maybach brand.
Adding to the excitement, our spy sources have captured images of a convertible version, confirming that the new Maybach SL will be available in both hard-top and soft-top variants. The vehicle was spotted exiting the AMG factory in Affalterbach, suggesting that this will be a high-performance iteration of an ultra-luxury car. It is being dubbed the pinnacle of automotive excellence—a fusion of luxury and performance.
Under the hood, the Maybach SL is expected to house a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, similar to the one found in the Maybach GLS and AMG GT-4. This powerhouse is anticipated to produce around 600 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
Mercedes’ new Maybach SL aims to compete with the likes of the Bentley Continental GTC, Maserati GranCabrio, and Ferrari Roma Spider. When launched, it will likely be available in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), targeting a niche market with little difficulty in attracting buyers. Sources indicate that the vehicle will make its debut in 2025.
This upcoming launch showcases Mercedes’ commitment to blending luxury with cutting-edge performance, solidifying its position in the competitive high-end convertible market.
