Mild-hybrid Toyota Fortuner debuts in South Africa

Toyota has introduced a new mild-hybrid variant of its popular SUV, the Fortuner, in the South African market. This update mirrors the Hilux MHEV (Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle) unveiled last year, featuring the same powertrain with enhanced performance and fuel efficiency.

The South African-spec Fortuner MHEV is equipped with a new 2.8-liter diesel engine paired with a 48V hybrid system, delivering 201bhp and 500Nm of torque. It boasts improved fuel efficiency at 13.15kmpl, compared to the non-hybrid version’s 12.66kmpl. The diesel engine is mated to a six-speed automatic torque converter in both 2WD and 4WD configurations.

Additionally, the Fortuner in South Africa receives upgrades like the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, a 360-degree surround camera, and redesigned alloy wheels.

In India, the Fortuner is currently offered with two engine options: a 2.7-liter petrol and a 2.8-liter diesel. It remains to be seen if the mild-hybrid technology will be introduced in the Indian version of the Fortuner.
