New terrain modes for future Tata cars leaked

A recently surfaced patent image of a terrain mode selector dial from Tata Motors hints at new features for the brand’s SUV lineup. Tata introduced the concept of traction mode selection with the Harrier in 2019, and it later extended to the Tata Safari. Currently, the available traction modes include normal, rough, and wet. However, the new patent image suggests the addition of more specific terrain modes like gravel, sand, snow, and rough roads.

The introduction of these enhanced terrain response modes indicates Tata Motors is likely developing an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option for its larger SUVs. At present, Tata’s entire passenger vehicle lineup, including both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) models, is front-wheel drive (FWD). The company has stated that it has the capability to offer AWD for its ICE models if there is enough demand.

In the competitive market, Tata’s rivals such as the Mahindra XUV700, Mahindra Scorpio N, and Jeep Compass, along with the Meridian, already offer 4WD or AWD options.

Tata’s upcoming Harrier EV, which is expected to launch in 2025, will include AWD, achieved through dual electric motors mounted on both axles. This technology will likely also feature in the future Safari EV, as Tata continues to expand its SUV lineup with AWD options.
